Grotech gets Fueltone Pro to the show on time

GROTECH Production Ltd are bottling experts with more than 40 years’ experience of helping companies package their products to fly off the shelves.

We do it in tandem with contract manufacturing or as a standalone service.  One recent project nearly stalled when a new product proved incompatible for the company’s existing distinctive branded bottles.

With less than weeks to go before the new product was launched at a major motor show in the UK Grotech Production Ltd’s MD, Martin Usher demonstrated his expertise and experience to get it back on track.

It all started when Fueltone Limited came to us with a new diesel fuel additive that they commissioned us to manufacture at our Goole factory.

We’ve been working with the Scottish company, for a couple of years and have successfully manufactured and packaged the Fueltone Pro range of petrol fuel additives in their distinctive branded black bottles.

Everything was going to plan with the new product due for delivery in time for the launch in the autumn until we started to package it. Early trials highlighted it was incompatible with their existing bottles.

One fuel additive may sound like any other but to a chemist different formulations react in different ways within the same packaging.  Similarly, image is everything for a retail product and it was at this point that Martin Usher’s industry knowledge came to prominence.

Martin realised the only solution to the packaging problem was to design a new mould for the petrol fuel additive product that would provide the packaging stability needed while creating a bottle that matched the existing Fueltone Pro range.

The petrol additive bottle is manufactured from PVC which is unsuitable for some of the raw materials used in the diesel product. After undertaking testing in the lab, involving paneling and product migration through the plastic, the Grotech Production Ltd team discovered the best material for the diesel fuel additive would be HDPE.

But that wasn’t the end of it.

With the clock ticking to the starting line of the motor show and hopes pinned on the new product we were under pressure.  And the research work wasn’t completed yet.

Once the new mould had been specified, designed and manufactured it then had to be fluorinated to ensure product stability in transit and on shelf.

Thankfully the Grotech Production Ltd team was able to turn the whole research, development and manufacture project around in time to get the bottles back, filled and en route to their destination.

Grotech Blooming Great Value for Money

Grotech Production Ltd has developed a reputation for being able to produce high quality horticultural and agricultural products for packaging by other companies.  A leading high street discounter came to us and asked if we could research, develop, pack and distribute a range for use by domestic gardeners.

They wanted a complete range of garden fertilisers that would compete with more expensve formulations on the market.  They wanted liquid fertilisers in bulk that they could bottle and retail affordably. It sounds simple enough but once you look beneath the surface the complexities emerge.

Our in house chemist, Thomas Grayson MChem knew he had to research and develop formulations that met the customer’s Nitrogen Phosphorus Potassium (NPK) values within their budget.

Once sourced we researched in our Goole laboratory, under strict hygiene conditions, and developed a number of blends which we then tested.

Our Challenges

Grotech faced three main challenges with this project:
• ensure that the products remained stable in solution during their shelf life which could be anything up to two years.
• there was no evidence of precipitation
• the products delivered optimum nutrients for the gardener at an affordable yet reasonable price.

At the same time Grotech Production Ltd’s ethos is to add value. To ensure we delivered on the customer’s brief Grotech Production Ltd undertook a lot of competitor research to ensure that the new products would be competitive both in price and nutritional value within the given market.

As part of our commitment to adding value Grotech Production Ltd suggested concentrated formulations to minimise packaging and transportation costs despite a number of changes to the brief during development.

Thanks to our experience, efficient system of research and development methods Grotech Production Ltd was able to supply to our customer on time and within budget. The customer was delighted. They were able to offer their consumers a range of high quality affordable garden fertilisers that helped their gardens bloom. They were assured that safety compliance was fulfilled and that they were doing their bit for the environment through concentrated formula.

Grotech Cleans Up for Paving Company

GARDENING and cleaning products are bread and butter to Grotech Production Ltd, but one recent project really tested our ability to deliver on time in budget.

Doncaster based builder, Dave Moore had developed a new paving cleaner called Block Blitz in response to customer demand for a product that would keep their brand new drives always looking shiny.

Dave came up with the formulation for a bio degradeable, easy application cleaner made from plant extracts that didn’t contain resins or sealers. Calling it Block Blitz, he started small scale production and sold it to customers around Doncaster. He quickly realised he had a winner on his hands and started to look at a more commercial operation. For it to be a commercial success though, he knew it would have to be professionally manufactured, packaged and formulated and he would need to market it.

Glee is the UK’s premier gardening and leisure conference, attracting buyers from multiple chain and major independent garden centres. Dave booked a stand, then contacted us and set the clock ticking.

Time wasn’t the only thing going against Dave because when products are upscaled, they often demand different formulations, manufacturing methods and packaging. This is where Grotech Production Ltd really helped Block Blitz turn their idea into a commercial reality.

With our in-house team of chemists, compliance and packaging experts we were able to advise Dave
on the formulation.

Industrial production changes the way things react so Tom Grayson, our development manager, helped Dave with the formula so that it retained its unique features but became compatible with modern manufacturing. We also offered advice on the best method of packaging to use so that the product was easy to transport, merchandise and still attractive to consumers.

Almost ready to go and with the clock ticking ever faster towards Glee, our in-house Health & Safety team stepped in to make sure Block Blitz ticked all the compliance boxes. Once we had ticked all our boxes and were happy Block Blitz complied with our own strict standards we despatched it to Glee.

By the time the first delegates came through the door Dave and his stand were ready for anything. Sandwiched between some of the major players in the horticulture industry it was a tough call to attract the attention of leading garden centre owners looking for new products that would sell.

It would appear that our partnership really paid off and Block Blitz was a star of the show. It attracted both the attention of buyers and of the show judges who awarded it two prizes at Glee.

Now back in Doncaster following up his leads Dave Moore said: “The team at Grotech Production Ltd was really helpful from the first minute we went to them for advice to the time Block Blitz left their factory. Many great ideas come unstuck when developers try to upscale their products. It is not simply a case of making more of the same. For commercial use you need to consider manufacturing processes, transportation, merchandising and consumer health and safety. Critically, to be commercially viable, products must be available when the consumer demand is at its greatest.
